A week in the world of BUAC

On the 20th March Annual Dinner took over the ICC. Lets hope the promise of “some alcohol” wasn’t the only factor in persuading over 100 athletes to attend. Everyone was there to take the most of an opportunity to show they can wear more than short shorts and crop tops; there’s plenty of time for that over Easter. Not many wore “as much glitter as humanly possible” as requested but everyone looked stunning (or handsome if boys have a problem with looking stunning). As well as a minimum three-course dinner, the night was complete with some terrible banter and slightly less terrible dancing.

By Wednesday we had all recovered and it was time for possibly an even bigger event. The weather conditions were perfect for this year’s rendition of the annual North Vs South football match. There may have been a slight lack of skill on the pitch, but team managers Will Gray and Paul Shaw made up for it. North took the victory 2-1; this isn’t so surprising when you consider the immense team they fielded. New Head of Athletics Luck Gunn made a star appearance, while fellow alumni Craig Gundersen was extremely pleased to return in a victorious year. Other notable performances included the two Michaels; Sweeney who supported a strong back line, and Wilson who did a lot of running at the front and scored the winner. The south weren’t too bad Ben Alcock and Mark Williams attempted to show prowess, while jogger through and through Jonny Davis scored South’s only goal.

Following this hallowed match was the turn of the last sports night; the social secs had decided to bring back BUAC Pub Decathlon. A roaring success last year, only time would tell how the class of 2015 would face the challenge. It would be excellent to report results from the evening but even though we all made it to the five venues, the event completion rate was extremely low, possibly 1/10. But good effort guys, everyone still had a smashing night living it up at Heeley and getting low in underground.

Come the weekend its time for serious running once more, this week we had the pleasure of seeing Jonny Hay swan around in his GB kit again. This time he was in Guiyang China for the World Cross country Championships. Hay captained a relatively small and young team who placed 15th overall, while Hay himself placed 84th.

Finally, the cross country boys and girls have just slipped off their cross spikes, but before they hit the track, there is just enough time for some road running. This weekend was the turn of the regional road relays before the nationals on the 11th April. The Northern’s saw Georgina Leck assist her team in coming home fifth with help from alumni Sarah Griffiths. In the Men’s race recent Alumni dominated as Joe Townsend and Daniel Cliff aided their team in their bid for first place; Leeds City AC won by less than a second. The midlands had a start list including some of the more experienced BUAC members, Tom Crowleys team placed 12th while Sarah Mackness team placed 7th. And thrown in for good measure BUAC big name Liam Roberts (Woberts) and his Tipton team came 4th. Official results haven’t been released from the Southern’s yet but rumour has it that there were sassy runs from Victoria Walker and Maryse Haynes, as well as post-BUACer Olivia Lucas. Furthermore there were some decent performances by the BUAC boys Patrick Taylor and track boy Ben Waterman.
